Travel Size Saves The Day – NYC Moments #123

July 9, 2009

It was one of those face draining moments:  I was on the F train on my way to a seminar to possibly (if my number was drawn out of the hat) audition in front of an agent and casting director, when I realized I had forgotten to put on deodorant.  Two things you never forget on your way to an interview:  Your resume and deodorant.  Being that I’m a problem solver, I immediately went into salvage the situation mode:  Duane Reade.  Travel Size aka: Purse Size.  Crisis averted.  I get to the SAG office and head straight to the ladies room only to discover that another actress had forgotten to put hers on as well.  I offered to share my now only once used stick, but she declined.  As it turns out, my number was not called to perform, but I was dry and ready to go if I had been one of the lucky ones.

Putting it out there – NYC Moments #115

June 10, 2009

It’s a beautiful thing when an artist can put there whole self out there with abandon for all to see. I saw that tonight with Guyora Kats  (http://www.myspace.com/guyorakats) who is a very talented musician and songwriter.    He’s playing again on June 24th @ 10pm at Rockwood Music Hall so come join the fun. He packs the crowd in so be prepared to get close with your neighbor :)

Enjoy!

A Haiku..part two

April 9, 2009

This worked so well before, so here goes again.  My BF in SD is a fantastic PR person specializing in New Media.  She has recently formed her own company ‘JMPR Communication’ (socialmediapr.wordpress.com) and is super busy.  Last time I did a Haiku for her it was for money to come in.  It did.  Now that she is super busy (because she is so good), I am doing another Haiku:

Abundant work, yeah!

Money and help are coming.

Bask in your greatness!

Real Moments

April 8, 2009

What I really love about NYC is that there are so many people here who allow themselves genuine moments.  By that I mean, they are open to each other and what is around them…they’re not just going through life on their own agenda.  One of the reasons I love the arts is that you are more apt to encounter people who can be there and go with it.  Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Deni Bonet at Rockwood Music Hall.  I did go specifically to hear her after I saw her perform at The Living Room a few weeks ago.  There were two moments in her gig that were just wonderful.  She and her band have the ability to work off each other and communicate in the moment.  Art is about giving after all…

Aloha NYC – NYC Moment #96

January 25, 2009

As much as we like to think that NYC is the end all, it isn’t.  Even New Yorkers need to get away once in a while.  I have a tradition of taking about 6 weeks off a year and hitting the road.  This year it is Haleiwa, Hawaii.  I actually used to live here, so it is like coming to my ‘other’ home.  Life is all hustle and bustle in NYC and the polar opposite in weather as well as life style.  NYC is fast and transient.  The North Shore is mellow and half transient…meaning that half the people live here and stay here and the other half are ‘returnies’ so to speak.  They are the ones who follow the waves.  If I’m lucky, the Eddie will go up (Google it).  If not, I’ll still get to see some awesome surfing.  There is something nice about coming back after 8 months and the same guys are at the Coffee Gallery (Google it-great coffee and they ship).  And they remember my name :)   Ron Artis is still jammin’ with his incredible family (Google him).  Forrest is still at the post office, Haleiwa Eats still serves great Thai food (Peggy and family are from NYC!) and of course Johnny still has Strong Current (surf shop – Google it) as well as the Grass Skirt Grill (awesome wholesome food – visit it).   Don’t get me wrong…I LOVE NYC…but it is nice to get away.  Aloha all…see you in March!

Mr. Mouse – NYC Moments: #89

October 21, 2008

I try to be a good person.  I try to bring aloha to all I do.  I try to do unto others, etc but sometimes life just doesn’t go according to plan.  Three nights ago I was finally making it to bed at 1am and boy was I tired.  After reading a bit of a Faulkner book I was about to turn the light out when I heard something.  Something was in my work bag.  Great.  Fine.  I’m so tired, I will just zip the bag up and whatever is in there will just have to wait until morning because I’m tired.  I put my head down again and was about to turn off the light once again when I saw a movement in my peripheral vision.  On go the glasses.  Yup.  I have a mouse in my apartment.  Great.  I hate killing things just as much as I hate not getting my sleep.  This is when my good nature took over.  I tried to catch the damn mouse so I could put it out on the street.  Four hours later, I did get it cornered in the closet and came oh so close to catching it, but alas…  That’s when I gave up and went to bed.  I love getting three hours sleep.  The next night I just doused myself with Nyquil, put in earplugs and donned my sleep mask.  Perfect.  I didn’t hear a sound so he must have left!  Wrong.  Night Three I hear him again.  I’m taking an over the counter drug for a mouse.  There is something wrong with this picture.  He can but I won’t.  So that is what I did.  I soaked a bit of bread in Nyquil and put it under the sink (his now home).  I didn’t hear a thing, so it must have worked.  I didn’t want to kill him, but  I certainly did not want to go sleepless again.  I did finally break down and now have the sticky traps in my apartment, but I have to say I hate that.  I’m really hoping he left in a drunken Nyquil stupor.

Pulling together – NYC Moments: #88

October 15, 2008

Life is a bit uncertain for a lot of people right now.  In my wanderings throughout the city, I have come across many different attitudes:  fear, greed, grateful, indifferent and yes, hopeful.  I know some people say that each person’s attitude affects the world.  I think to an extent that is true.  I have run across so many people who are pulling together.  Rather than being greedy, they are thinking of each other.  When I come across this then I feel more at ease and then perhaps the next person will and the next and the next. (Like the old Prell commercials…yes, I just dated myself :)  Are times uncertain? Yes.  Can we do things to help each other and the environment we live in?  Yes.

Nice Neighbors – NYC Moments: #86

September 29, 2008

You really discover who your neighbors are when you are in need.  My neighbor (the one who has the James Dean apartment…lucky dog!) saved me from complete and utter boredom when I was flat on my back sick with only dvd’s that I had seen AT LEAST 20 times each.  I heard him coming down the stairs so I opened the door and croak, “I’m sick.  Do you have any dvd’s?”  ”What would you like?”, he asked.  At that point I must have looked dazed and confused because he just went back upstairs and god bless his soul, brought down an assorted bunch.  ”Thanks”, I croaked.  I then shut the door, slid one into my computer and fell into bed.  48 hours later, I emerged from my apartment much better and surprisingly sane…all because of my nice neighbor. :)

Bulls anyone? – NYC Moments: #85

September 24, 2008

I love New York.  You can get anything here.  You can see anything here.  Case in point:  I was blading around the loop in Central Park yesterday and saw people practicing cracking their bull whips.  Funny…I didn’t see any bulls around…

Just Do It – NYC Moments: #82

September 16, 2008

I think we all have a different reason for being here.  I was hanging out with a friend last night and the consensus between us was that if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.  NYC offers opportunities that are not available elsewhere.  If you choose to grab them.  I know I have grown as a person, friend and artist in the Big Apple.  Tomorrow will bring even more opportunities, so as Nike suggests:  Just Do It.  Just go out there and do and be who you want to be.   The opportunity is here, so take advantage of what this vibrant city has to offer.
