Twitter spam…Really? – NYC Moments #101

April 21, 2009

Maybe the title of this should be Twitter 101…or for that matter Facebook 101.  I’m talking about spam.  A friend of mine on FB wrote this morning, “Isn’t the point of Twitter that you send out short tweets less than 140 characters? I feel a bit annoyed when I get 10 consecutive tweets from the same person either continuing their message or sending out a million links to their products or sites.”  I agree.  Can you guys/gals not be so flipping narcissistic and keep it down?  There are other people out there in the world to share the space with after all…

Real Moments

April 8, 2009

What I really love about NYC is that there are so many people here who allow themselves genuine moments.  By that I mean, they are open to each other and what is around them…they’re not just going through life on their own agenda.  One of the reasons I love the arts is that you are more apt to encounter people who can be there and go with it.  Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Deni Bonet at Rockwood Music Hall.  I did go specifically to hear her after I saw her perform at The Living Room a few weeks ago.  There were two moments in her gig that were just wonderful.  She and her band have the ability to work off each other and communicate in the moment.  Art is about giving after all…

Things I learned on a different island other than Manhattan.

February 20, 2009

hawaiiWell…my time in Hawaii is over.  For now.  I realized that I really love NYC, but I also really love Hawaii.

In NYC, you have the complete artistry, the fast pace, the immersion of creation and something to do or see constantly.  For me, the draw is in being someplace were you are surrounded by people creating and striving to achieve.

Hawaii on the other hand is all about Aloha.  Not to say that New Yorker’s are not nice and don’t stop to help you.  It’s just that it was so nice to go the the Coffee Gallery every day at 7am and hang out with the same bunch of people while we had our morning brew.  Then off we went to our various days, but I was filled with a sense of peace by the friendships that are built there.  Not to say that we always agreed with each other about whatever was being discussed, but it was more about making the time to be with friends.

I can’t help but feel that we get so busy in NYC that we become islands unto ourselves at times rather than a big mass of land welcoming each other.

I for one will try and keep the Aloha alive no matter what island I am on…

7 Things You May Or May Not Know About Me, The Game – NYC Moments: #94

January 2, 2009

My best friend in San Diego, Jennifer Mitchell (http://socialmediapr.wordpress.com/) tagged me with ‘7 Things You May Or May Not Know About Me, The Game’.  Usually I just delete these things, but since she is my best friend and I want to be able to continue sleeping on her sofa when I go to visit…Well, here goes:

“Seven Things You May Or May Not Know About Me”  is a game that has been circulating around the blogosphere.  Bloggers are asked to both reveal seven things about themselves others may not know, and to tag seven other bloggers.

1.  My first parts modeling job here in NY was for ‘Allure Magazine’…it was a picture of my tush…

2.  I always wanted to be a performer, so I bought my first guitar about in 2008…I’ve been tapping since 2007…Earned my SAG card in 1997…finished my  professional training as an actor here in NYC in 1998…

3.  I have A LOT of different assets to my personality: depth, kid-like, flip cab drivers off, spiritual, reading blob, compassionate, not much into relationship games, big heart, love to laugh, music is essential, my friends and family are my second rock (I’m my first), gullible, sensitive, determined, love to nap, love to write…

4.  Speaking of my laugh…it’s unique for sure…

5.  I’ve been stitched up four times…

6.  I’m a pretty good shot…photo and gun-slinger 🙂

7.  I have valid state id’s in NY, CA and HI…

Listening to others – NYC Moment #15

May 15, 2008

Yesterday I had something happen in life that threw me a bit.  I knew that I did not want to embrace this little bit of drama and have it grow in my life, but I also know that I just couldn’t ignore it.  So I talked about it with a few friends and of course my mom.  Each person had a slightly different take on the situation, but ultimately I know that I am the one who has to decide which course is best for me.  After all, I am the only one who has walked in my shoes for my lifetime and what is good for someone else may not be in my best interest.  This really hit home this last winter when big stuff was happening in my life.  If I had gone with my own instincts I would have been better off rather than doing what others though was best.  Lesson learned.  So for this very minor drama, it helps to talk out loud, but I know that I will go within an pull out the answer that is right for me.  In this big city, there are a plethora of opinions.  I am grateful to those who shared their thoughts because I truly can’t think of everything and from those thoughts I will do what is right for Jillanne.
